Pentecost

Pentecost is another jubilant celebration at St Margarets when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit on the believers in the early Church, soon after Jesus had ascended to heaven. We praise him that the Holy Spirit is available to  us today and pray for his renewing in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is God within us, the third person of the Trinity.
There are traditional signs associated with the Holy Spirit that help us to understand the work that he can do in us.

The Flame indicates the bold strength and power  of the Holy Spirit to anoint us to witness about God in our words and actions.

The Wind speaks of the Spirit's life giving power to change us and enable us to live out our Christian lives.

The Dove tells of the Spirit anointing us for God's purposes and the fruits of a changed, godly character that develop in us as he brings us deeper understanding of God's love and ways.

The Breath  signifies the ever renewing life,  strength, energy and purpose that the Spirit breathes into us for  our daily walk with God.

Did you know that originally the day of Pentecost was an Israelite Harvest Festival celebrating the collecting in of the first fruits of the crops? That's what the disciples were celebrating and why they were all together when the Holy Spirit came. From then on, Pentecost became the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes Pentecost is also known as Whitsun, that is White Sunday because of the white robes that newly baptised people used to wear after their Easter baptisms.

Happy Birthday!

Pentecost is celebrated as the Birthday of the Christian Church because from then on the disciples of Jesus were empowered to follow Jesus' instructions to reach out in mission to the world.
